Reagan reached over and ran her fingertips
across the red mark on my face. “I’m so sorry
you were hurt.”
Her touch and the sincerity in her eyes melted
me on the spot. I was in love with this woman
somewhere in time, and those feelings had not
changed. Instinctively, I knew what would make
her laugh and what would make her cry. I was
in tune with her emotions more so than my own.
“Time hasn’t changed the way I feel for you,”
I admitted without fear. I lifted her hand and
kissed her palm.
Reagan squeezed her eyes shut against the
tears that threatened to fall. “I knew the
minute that you walked into my store that
there was something special about you. I keep
wondering what’s wrong with me. I’ve only
known you for a short time, and I can’t stand
to be apart from you. But do you realize what
we’re saying? We’re toying with time itself.”
My heart was soaring; all the missing pieces
were falling in place for me. I never could
let myself go with other lovers because my
heart belonged to another. And now she was
sitting right in front of me. There was
nothing I wouldn’t do for this stranger, and
yet she wasn’t. I’d known and loved her
always.
Reagan’s eyes snapped open and she pulled her
hand from mine, standing abruptly. “This is
crazy! It makes no sense!”
And just like that, the roles had reversed. I
was the calm, collected one and she was losing
it.
“No, it’s not crazy,” I protested.
“Yes, it is. Listen to what we’re professing!”
she said with a sob.
I stood and took a step toward her as she took
two steps back. “Please don’t touch me right
now.”
“Do you want me to leave?” I asked as my heart
sank.
“Yes, please.” Reagan’s eyes filled with
tears. “I just—I need some time alone.”
I stood there staring at her; she turned her
face away from me, then walked out of the
room. I felt like someone had punched me in
the stomach. I collected my globe and honored
her request, leaving without a word.
